If you are looking for a good value turntable that can directly connect to your computer and copy vinyl direct to digital, then you need to think about the Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB Turntable.
The Audio Technica range is well known for producing solid and sturdy products and the AT-LP120 USB is no different, but it’s big advantage is that the USB output allows you to connect it straight to a Mac or a PC
When you are looking for a quality vinyl record player, it is really important that the sound comes our clear and strong. The stylus provided is of a good quality and the sound is great, especially in the mid ranges. You can choose to do so, but I don’t think that there is any need to get any other stylus apart from the one that comes with the turntable.
The quality of the music once copied onto digital through the USB cable is slightly reduced and there is a little bit of background noise, but it is not enough to worry anyone. Having said that, if you want the digital music to sound perfect, you may be better downloading it from Spotify instead of relying on the Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB. I suspect that in reality, most audiophiles will be buying this record player so that they can listen to the vinyl itself and when you do that, you will be delighted with the sound quality.
The operation is simple and straightforward. A detailed manual is provided and is available online too. You can have a look at YouTube for operating guidance too, but in reality, I don’t think that you will really need to do this as, once the turntable is set up, it is easy to use.
The USB connection to a Mac or PC is a simple case of plug and go, so when you plug them together, you are able to copy your music straight away.
This is a manual turntable, so when you get to the end of the album the tone arm stays in place. This is not a problem for most people, but you do have to take care not to scratch the record when lifting the arm off.
• High Torque Direct Drive Motor
• USB Output connects directly with Mac or PC
• USB and adapter cables included
• 3 speeds – 33 / 45 / 78
• Built in amplifier
• High quality stylus
There is no headphone jack and this will be frustrating for many customers. This omission is surprising and I cannot think of an obvious reason that a headphone jack is not provided. Some amps or speakers do have a facility for the use of headphones, so that may have been Audio Technica’s thinking.
The Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB is an excellent vinyl record player and provides sturdy build quality with crystal clear sound to create a really nice experience. The USB connection is easy to use, although you do lose a little bit of sound quality – probably not enough to be a real down mark though. The lack of headphone jack is an issue for some people, but the overall quality and feel of this turntable is excellent and great value.
